Company History
Micron
Optics is recognized as a premier supplier of wavelength
tunable components and a technology leader of filter-based,
optical modules and test instruments. Calvin M. Miller founded
Micron Optics in 1990 and provided customized tunable filters
to researchers in the early 90's and helped establish Erbium-doped
fiber pre-amplified receivers as the preferred technology
for today's dense WDM fiber optic communication systems.
Remaining focused on its core, seminal technology - the
Fiber Fabry-Perot
tunable filter (FFP-TF), Micron Optics has developed
an array of products from its high-performance tunable filters,
to absolute wavelength references, optical performance analyzers,
and high-speed wavelength interrogators. These products
address diverse markets such as telecommunications, optical
sensing, biotech and general spectroscopy.
June 2002 was marked by sadness for Micron Optics.
We, along with many pioneers in the optical industry, grieved with the
tragic loss of our Founder, Calvin M. Miller. Cal was the true father
of the Micron Optics family. He was responsible for the core development
of the FFP technology, for handpicking our management and engineering teams,
and for initiating the spirit and unity that binds the employees of Micron
Optics as a family. He will truly be missed. However, through the technology
and teams Cal put in place, Micron Optics is continuing his vision of providing
products with "killer" performance based on "simply elegant solutions".
In 2003, Micron Optics expanded the optical sensing
product line to include the si720, an optical sensing analyzer and the
si425, an optical sensing interrogator. The si425 and si720 have proven to be
the seminal instruments allowing optical sensor field trials to prove-in FBG
technology. These instruments, known for their accuracy, quality and ruggedness,
were deployed on five continents and under three seas.
The 2004 product highlights consisted
of new components and instruments with breakthrough price/performance.
With the release of the TF2, our low-cost widely tunable
filter, we can now offer up to 400nm tuning range. Micron
Optics continued to lead the optical sensing market with
the introduction of a field-worthy optical sensor interrogation
system, the sm125. Designed to provide the most accurate
pressure, temperature and strain measurements for static
applications, the sm125 is already used extensively in energy
(down-hole oil and pipeline) and structural health monitoring
applications.
